HOW DOES DEEP TMS WORK?

Deep TMS uses electrical impulses to regulate your brain’s production of neurotransmitters, leading to improved mood and mental stability. Inside the helmet, BrainsWay’s unique, patented H-coil technology works to directly stimulate deeper and broader regions of the brain. At APN London, we have three helmet options from BrainsWay, all with different coils. Each coil is uniquely designed to treat depression, anxiety and OCD, or smoking addiction.

WHAT DOES TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION TMS TREAT?

Deep TMS is FDA-approved for major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), smoking cessation, and anxious depression. It is UKCA-marked and has NICE approval for depression with more conditions in the research phase.

At APN London, we use three different Brainsway helmets. Each helmet houses an H-coil designed to address specific conditions, including:

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Major depressive disorder and anxious depression
  • Smoking addiction

GET TREATED IN-PERSON

APN London Deep TMS sessions are safe, quick, effective, and generally well tolerated. At APN, a Deep TMS technician will oversee each session and answer any questions you might have before, during, and after the treatment. The number of sessions can vary, but you can expect each session to last about 20 minutes, with the initial consultation and brain mapping taking 60-90 minutes.

A DEEP TMS SUCCESS STORY

Meet Pierre, a former client at All Points North Lodge in Colorado, US – who was eligible for Deep TMS treatment for anxiety and depression. When Pierre first arrived at the Lodge, he didn’t realise Deep TMS was available, but his experience compelled him to talk about it with others because of the positive results he achieved.

THE RESEARCH ON DEEP TRANSCRANIAL MAGNETIC STIMULATION

Deep TMS has been tested in over 60 clinical studies for various indications in leading institutions all over the world, and it is CE-marked for the clinical treatment of Major Depressive Disorder, OCD, anxious depression, smoking cessation, bipolar disorder, PTSD, schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s disease, chronic pain, post-stroke rehabilitation, autism, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease. Currently, Deep TMS is available in the US, Europe, and South America. Over 15,000 clients have been treated with BrainsWay Deep TMS already, and the research on its impact and conditions continues to grow.

DEEP TMS FOR DEPRESSION

Deep TMS is a non-invasive and convenient treatment option for those struggling with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Deep TMS is CE-Marked for Major Depressive Disorder. Studies have shown the treatment to be effective for clients with depression, no matter how many medications have been tried or how many medications didn’t work. In fact, Deep TMS is often said to be effective for those with medication-resistant depression.

In real-life clinical settings, Deep TMS was proven to be effective for 3 out of 4 major depression clients with a 51% remission rate and a 75% response rate.

DEEP TMS FOR OCD

In addition to Deep TMS’s success for depression treatment, a Brainsway TMS helmet for treatment-resistant OCD is also CE-marked. A real-life setting study in the Journal of Psychiatric Research found that over 70% of study clients experienced at least a 30% reduction in OCD symptom severity after 18.5 sessions. After 20 sessions, about 50% of study clients maintained that 30% or more severity reduction for a sustained period of time. In another study from the American Journal of Psychiatry, 54.8% of patients achieved at least a 20% reduction in symptom severity after six weeks of treatment.

DEEP TMS FOR SMOKING CESSATION

Deep TMS is the first and only FDA-approved non-invasive medical device for the treatment of smoking addiction. Deep TMS is also CE-marked for smoking addiction. A study completed by BrainsWay showed that 28% of Deep TMS clients sustained abstinence from smoking for at least 4 consecutive weeks as compared to only 11.7% of control group clients. This study was double-blind, multi-centre, and conducted with patients who had a 26-year smoking history. Deep TMS for smoking has been found to be well-tolerated for most clients.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RTMS AND DTMS

Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMS) is a potentially more effective solution in TMS therapy, especially for clients in London seeking innovative treatments. Unlike the traditional rTMS, which uses a figure-8 coil affecting shallower brain regions, dTMS utilizes a three-dimensional H-coil helmet design. This advanced approach allows for broader and deeper brain stimulation, reaching up to 1.25 inches (3.2 cm) into brain structures. Such depth and range are crucial in effectively managing symptoms of various mental health conditions. This makes dTMS a compelling choice for those seeking advanced therapy options in London.
