Sometimes, it’s easier to practice empathy and understanding for other people. When you connect with someone struggling with the stigma and repercussions of mental health and addiction issues, you can learn how to support them and then practice that skill with yourself.
Group therapy helps treat the cultural and social aspects of addiction and mental health issues and encourages people to learn from each other and foster an environment rooted in community. The lessons you learn in group therapy continue far outside of treatment and make up an essential component of long-term recovery. Group therapy teaches people the value of accepting help from others, giving back to their community, and leading by example.
A COMBINED APPROACH FOR BETTER OUTCOMES
At APN London, both therapy groups and individual therapy sessions are available in our Harley Street Medical Area office. When you work one-on-one with a clinician, you’ll learn the skills you need to process complex emotions and get to the root of addiction, mental health issues, and trauma. Then, in group sessions, you’ll be able to practice these skills in a supportive environment with clinician guidance.
When comparing group and individual therapy, it’s essential to recognise that both treatments can work together as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Each treatment carries unique benefits that help people overcome mental health challenges and substance use disorders, and they work better together than either therapy does alone.

with Caio Rocha, CPsychol, AFBPsS
In this group, participants will benefit from group schema therapy (GST), an approach developed specifically for people who have longer-term emotional difficulties and problems with their relationships (especially close ones). This technique targets change at the underlying patterns of behaviour, emotions, and beliefs that make up and maintain our ʻschemasʼ, providing a structured framework for making sense of our psychology and any difficulties we may experience. GST helps you to recognise how your earlier life influences the way you feel about yourself, others and the world, and this perspective shapes how you go about coping with life now.
